Summer Show: Exhibitor Information

Cancelled Due to COVID-19

UPDATE – May 26, 2020

I am hoping you and your families are staying healthy and safe. It has been a challenging few weeks, and seems that the minute I almost feel like I’m on my feet again something new knocks me down, I expect many of you are having similar experiences. Fingers crossed that we will have a quiet Nova Scotia going forward, with increased normalcy, only time will tell.

Our Executive Director Susan Hanrahan and I participated in a call with Dr. Robert Strang, and other stakeholders in the arts, culture and events community this past Friday, May 22nd. As was expected, Dr. Strang’s approach is a conservative one, which is comforting in many ways, but does limit our ability to plan for the future. It was very clear during the call that gatherings of 50 people will not be coming for several weeks, likely the end of August if public health guidelines are followed closely, and no increase in COVID-19 cases occur in the interim.

What does this mean for us? We had already rescheduled our annual Aestival Festival fundraiser, and our AGM, openings at the Mary E. Black etc. We had been holding off on the summer show until we received direction from public health officials. Susan and I both agree that with public gatherings of 50 not being possible until late August at the earliest it is time to cancel the summer show. Susan has sent out an email to the Board, and the messages of agreement have already started coming in. This decision was a heartbreaking one to make, but is of course best for everyone’s ongoing health and safety.

Susan and and I will be meeting with the Market Advisory Committee this coming Friday to discuss this cancellation, public health implications re: the Winter Show, alternative events, and any other ideas you might have to offer.

Please feel free to email me your thoughts so that I can use them as we find our way forward. And please do reach out if you need assistance in any way. I may not be able to help directly, but I might know where to start, or who to ask. If anyone is interested in gathering with other members via video call (Zoom or Teams) please let me know and I’ll send out an invitation.

Now that things have settled down somewhat I’ll be sending out weekly updates on our planning, surveys to ask you about your take on event and programming ideas, and just to stay connected during these strange times.
