Freelance Social Media, Email & Web Content Manager

Organization: Craft Nova Scotia
Contract Type: Independent Contractor / Freelance
Location: Remote-friendly, preference for Nova Scotia-based or Atlantic Canada candidates

About Craft Nova Scotia

Craft Nova Scotia is a small non-profit organization representing more than 400 craftspeople across the province. We are in an important period of renewal—rebuilding trust, stabilizing operations, and refocusing on member visibility and support.
We operate with a small staff team: an Executive Director, an Operations Manager, and a General Technician, supported by an active Board of Directors and volunteers. We are reshaping our communications to be more transparent, community-centred, and sustainable over the long term.
Earlier this year, Craft NS worked with an external consultant to develop a detailed Social Media & Email Content Strategy, including tone, content pillars, workflows, and success measures. We are now seeking a freelance contractor to carry this work forward and manage implementation. This is not an employee position.

Scope of Work

The contractor will lead ongoing implementation of Craft NS’s social media, email, and website content strategy, including:
1. Social Media Strategy, Content & Management (Instagram & Facebook)
Approx. 3 posts per week (e.g., Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday), maintaining and refining the existing content structure:
  • Content planning & creation
    • Develop and publish posts under key content categories, such as:
      • Meet the Maker spotlights
      • Behind-the-Scenes: Craft NS Rebuild updates
      • Craft process / studio / “craft in action” content (photo, video, Reels)
      • Event and exhibition promotion
      • Opportunities & industry news (grants, calls, deadlines)
      • Community engagement posts (polls, Q&As, prompts)
      • Reposting and amplifying member and partner content
  • Scheduling & tools
    • Use Meta Business Suite or similar tools for scheduling and basic analytics.
    • Maintain a shared content calendar and project tracker (e.g., Google Drive / Sheets / Docs).
  • Community engagement
    • Monitor and respond to comments, DMs, and tagged content.
    • Proactively engage with member accounts and partner organizations to increase visibility.
  • Performance & reporting
    • Provide a short monthly report summarizing reach, engagement, follower growth, and key insights, with recommendations for adjustments.
2. Email Newsletter Drafting & Management (Bi-weekly)
  • Draft, design, and schedule bi-weekly email newsletters (Mailchimp or similar), following and evolving the existing structure, which typically includes:
    • Member spotlight / maker feature
    • Opportunities & announcements (funding, calls, sector news)
    • Behind-the-scenes “Craft NS Rebuild” updates
    • Studio / gallery news (Mary E. Black Gallery and Centre for Craft spaces)
    • Events, workshops, and calls for participation
    • Simple engagement features (polls, questions, feedback links)
  • Manage and segment the email list to support targeted communication.
  • Optimize subject lines, preview text, and layout to improve open and click-through rates.
  • Provide brief bi-monthly newsletter performance snapshots (open/click rates, top-performing content, recommendations).
3. Website Content Management
In alignment with our overall content strategy, the contractor will:
  • Update and maintain website content (e.g., news, events, exhibitions, opportunities, program pages).
  • Ensure content is current, accurate, and aligned with our communications tone and brand.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director and Operations Manager to:
    • Post new announcements and calls for entry
    • Update member-facing information and public-facing information
    • Support website content related to major events (e.g., shows, campaigns, special projects).
  • Optimize basic elements of web content:
    • Formatting for readability and accessibility
    • Image selection, cropping, alt text, and file naming
    • Simple internal linking between relevant pages.
Website design skills will be considered a strong asset.
This may include: basic page layout design, user experience considerations, simple landing pages for campaigns, and collaboration with external web developers when needed.
4. Workflow, Systems & Documentation
Building on the existing strategy and tools, the contractor will:
  • Maintain and refine the shared content calendar and project tracker (e.g., key dates, campaigns, member features).
  • Help manage a maker content intake process (e.g., Google Form + email option) to collect bios, photos, and videos from members.
  • Track member features over time to support equitable visibility and representation across disciplines, regions, and identities.
  • Provide light documentation so that the workflow is clear and sustainable for Craft NS staff and future contractors.

Desired Qualifications

We welcome proposals from individuals and small freelance teams with:
  • Demonstrated experience (3+ years) in social media management and content strategy, ideally for arts, culture, or non-profit organizations.

  • Experience with website content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, or similar:
    • Able to perform regular content updates (text, images, links, basic page structure).
    • Website design / UX skills (e.g., layout, simple landing pages, basic visual design) are a strong asset.
  • Comfort working with:
    • Meta Business Suite (or other scheduling/analytics tools)
    • Google Drive / Docs / Sheets
    • Basic image / video editing tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Express, or similar).
  • Familiarity with Nova Scotia’s craft sector or broader arts community is an asset.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and to amplifying a wide range of craft traditions and voices.

Working Relationship

  • The contractor will work closely with the Executive Director, and in regular coordination with the Operations Manager and General Technician (for events, photography, documentation, etc.).
  • Work is primarily remote, with flexibility around working hours. Occasional in-person attendance at events or studio visits is an asset but not required.
  • This is an independent contractor engagement: the contractor is responsible for their own equipment, workspace, software subscriptions beyond agreed tools, and all taxes/benefits.

Contract Term & Budget

  • Initial term: [e.g., 3–6 months], with the possibility of extension based on fit, performance, and funding.
  • Estimated start date: January 5th, 2026 (or earlier if available)
  • Compensation: Please provide a clear fee structure, including:
    • any one-time setup / strategy / template costs, and
