We Move We Remain
The 2026 Summer Studio artists-in-residence have developed new work during the past three months which reflects the in-between in all its forms. This can be understood as migration from one country to another, a body in motion, a natural form changing; grief, uncertainty, and reclamation.
The artists are themselves in an interim stage, emerging from post-secondary education to a professional practice on their own terms. The Summer Studio Residency creates an environment where artists can suspend their usual conditions and enter a period of experimentation: testing, changing, questioning and becoming.
One can experience enormous displacement while still carrying an unbroken connection to a former home, identity, history or culture. Likewise, traces of deep geological time remain in the present. The corporeal presence, whether real or implied, imbues objects with life; creating space for us to imagine ourselves dancing, swaying, or embodying.
The threads of migration, geological time, and physical presence running through the works suggest that identity is not a fixed point but a path, shaped by movement, by loss, and by adapting to what is new, yet never fully severed from where it began.
We Move We Remain honours not only the finished works but also the risk embedded in their making. What visitors encounter here is evidence of artists defining and exceeding their own limits: between training and practice, one place and another, between what was and what is still taking shape. They are in motion, and they remain themselves.
The opening reception will take place Thursday, September 3, 2026 from 6–8PM in Passages Gallery.
