Symbiosis: A curated exhibition of collaborative works by members of Craft Nova Scotia opens at the Mary E. Black Gallery on Thursday, September 23, 2021.
Craft Nova Scotia’s 2021 annual members’ exhibition is a curated exhibition on the theme of Symbiosis. We have encouraged projects that are a creative exploration of the spirit and practice of working in collaboration. Twenty-one craftspeople and artists have created works that incorporate textiles, wood, photography, music, metal, printmaking, dyeing, illustration, ceramics,
recycled objects, and animation.
“The past two years have resulted in a great deal of self-reflection, as individuals, craftspeople, and as organizations. We are discovering the need and desire for connections, and the need to be creative and innovative, finding new ways of going forward together. This exhibit showcases the result of multiple collaborations.”
Emerging curators, ceramic artists, educators and experienced collaborators, Kaas Ghanie, and Kate Grey, will work with craft and art historian, writer, educator and curator Dr. Julie Hollenbach, to create a dynamic and exciting exhibition that celebrates collaboration and collectivity. The curatorial team explores the unique points of view brought by the contributing artists, and the common “grammar” they bring to the collaborative works.
“The collection of exceptional works included in Symbiosis speaks to significant aspects of this project: varied processes, extensive communication and planning, sensitive adaptation and problem solving, experiments driven by curiosity, teamwork and community building.”
