Symbiosis: A curated exhibition of collaborative works by members of Craft Nova Scotia

Symbiosis: A curated exhibition of collaborative works by members of Craft Nova Scotia opens at the Mary E. Black Gallery on Thursday, September 23, 2021.

Craft Nova Scotia’s 2021 annual members’ exhibition is a curated exhibition on the theme of Symbiosis. We have encouraged projects that are a creative exploration of the spirit and practice of working in collaboration. Twenty-one craftspeople and artists have created works that incorporate textiles, wood, photography, music, metal, printmaking, dyeing, illustration, ceramics,
recycled objects, and animation.

“The past two years have resulted in a great deal of self-reflection, as individuals, craftspeople, and as organizations. We are discovering the need and desire for connections, and the need to be creative and innovative, finding new ways of going forward together. This exhibit showcases the result of multiple collaborations.”

– Kelly Jerrott, Craft Nova Scotia – Executive Director

Emerging curators, ceramic artists, educators and experienced collaborators, Kaas Ghanie, and Kate Grey, will work with craft and art historian, writer, educator and curator Dr. Julie Hollenbach, to create a dynamic and exciting exhibition that celebrates collaboration and collectivity. The curatorial team explores the unique points of view brought by the contributing artists, and the common “grammar” they bring to the collaborative works.

“The collection of exceptional works included in Symbiosis speaks to significant aspects of this project: varied processes, extensive communication and planning, sensitive adaptation and problem solving, experiments driven by curiosity, teamwork and community building.”

– Excerpt from the curatorial essay

The exhibition will be on display at the Mary E. Black Gallery, part of the Centre for Craft Nova Scotia in Halifax, Nova Scotia from September 23rd to November 7th, 2021. A virtual opening reception will be broadcast on @craftnovascotia Facebook Live on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 6:30pm.

About Craft Nova Scotia & our mandate

Craft Nova Scotia, (also known as Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council), is a non-profit, charitable arts service organization that works to encourage and promote both the craft movement in Nova Scotia and the public awareness and appreciation of craft products and activities. Craft Nova Scotia was formed in 1973 by a group of craftspeople who recognized the need for a provincial organization to support and develop the quality craft movement. Today, Craft Nova Scotia is the provincially recognized craft organization, with a membership of over 300 individual artisans and craft enthusiasts and represents over 1000 others through group and guild members such as Co-Adorn, Metal Arts Guild, NS Potters Guild, NS Basketry Guild, Visual Arts NS, Atlantic Spinners and Handweavers, and many others. Craft Nova Scotia is proud to manage and operate the Centre for Craft Nova Scotia, on behalf of the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Centre for Craft houses the Mary E. Black Gallery, and six craft studios that offer a wide variety of courses, workshops and residencies to the community and craftspeople across the province and beyond.

Craft Nova Scotia plays an active role in promoting craft in the province, and in building the craft community into the thriving economic and cultural force it is today. Through retail craft shows, exhibitions, publications and other activities, we promote the work of our members locally, nationally and internationally.

Craft Nova Scotia is committed to being an inclusive and supportive resource and reflection of the greater craft community locally, nationally, and internationally.

Craft Nova Scotia acknowledges that we are located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We acknowledge and honour the Mi’kmaq people who have cared for, and continue to care for this land.
