Bookbinding has a long history in Japan and China and many traditional bookbinding techniques originated there much earlier than other parts of the world. In this workshop, students will be introduced to this important chapter in the history of bookbinding and learn several approaches to bookbinding using traditional Eastern materials and tools. Six traditional binding methods will be covered over the weekend. A collection of authentic antique Japanese books will be available to examine as well. The skills and techniques learned in this class will be a good foundation for folks new to bookbinding but also an excellent addition to the skillset of more experienced students who have not yet explored Eastern bookbinding in-depth.
